Abstract

Racism is a longstanding cultural element in Europe based on the belief of an existing natural hierarchy among races and cultures that divides human beings into superiors and inferiors. This book looks at such a widespread phenomenon as racism in its situated forms through the lenses of space and time. Aimed at scholars, social and cultural professionals, the book highlights the continuity of racism over time and its same identic logic of classify-separate-exclude-exploit-exterminate. How can racism be overcome? Chapter 1 analyses the different roles and functions racism plays in the economic, political, social, and psychological dimension. Chapter 2 reports on the European and Italian cases to show how institutional racism is part of migration governance and migrant integration policies. Chapter 3 focuses on the antiracism fight in the United States, from the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter. Chapter 4 proposes to acknowledge the current historical amnesia in order to enhance historical awareness and foster the decolonization of knowledge, language, and mind.
