Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] According to Michel Pastoureau, wearing striped clothing was in the Middle Ages a symbol of exclusion from the established social order: because the jester, the Jew, the prostitute were considered "diabolical", they wore stripes. Over the centuries, some striped clothes become acceptable by society; in the nineteenth and twentieth century, finally, one invented other typologies of stripes: hygienic (the stripes of the lingerie), sporting or emblematic (the uniform, the flag). However, the values of the dress code of the Middle Ages do not disappear, often superimposed on modern or contemporary codes. In our contribution, we propose to study the striped clothes worn by certain characters from the Proust Research, notably M. de Charlus. If, in a general way, fashion in Proust's work functions as the vector of inclusion (of an individual in relation to a group) or as the trace of the original character of a person, what is the function some striped clothes? Are they interpretable according to the categories of Pastoureau? In the architecture of research, the red thread of the stripes will, in conclusion, reinterpret the "woven" relationships between the characters.
