Abstract

These pages focus on the iconic-representative dimension of public life and political arrangements, beyond the mainstream focus of contemporary political philosophy over the argumentative dimension and the quest for public reasons. The fixation of public justification has too often marginalized the philosophical consideration for the issue of "visibility" in the "public sphere"; an issue that is however crucial if we look at the reality of political life and its theatrical features, populated by narratives, slogans, symbols and "icons" more than by arguments and reasons. Political representation and iconic representation are mutually connected, with a huge role played by "comical" codes that confer to images a distinct performative impact on the citizens and their relationship with the political institutions. The ethics of political representation cannot focus exclusively on the argumentative dimension of the democratic debate, but needs to take into account its visual, narrative and iconic dimensions.
