Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Introduction. The subject of representations of foster care has been little investigated and the studies that have probed how foster care is seen and perceived by the general population are limited. The importance of investigating the subject of representations as a "guide for action" emerges. Targets. The present study assumes the characteristics of a research-action aimed at probing the representations of foster care and promoting a culture of acceptance. The general objective is to investigate which factors predict a positive and realistic representation of foster care. Prosocial behavior, the generative attitude and a vision of a coherent social world have been taken into consideration, hypothesizing that more positive and realistic visions of foster care are connected to them and consequently favoring a potential availability to reception. Methodology. A self-report questionnaire containing socio-demographic variables, variables related to foster care, the Prosocial Behavioral Scale (Caprara et al., 2005), the Sense of Coherence Scale (Antonovsky, 1993) and the Loyola Generativity Scale (McAdams & De St Aubin, 1992) was administered to parents and teachers of nine Comprehensive Institutes (N = 1285). Results and conclusions. Positive assessments towards foster care are connected to higher levels of the three aspects investigated. Prosocial behavior, generative attitude and world view as coherent are predictors of a positive and realistic representation of foster care. Individuals with higher levels of prosocial behavior, generative attitude and a coherent world view may be more sensitive to interventions aimed at identifying potential foster families.
