Abstract
The role of religious arguments in the public debate is a controversial subject in the liberal tradition, and especially in the framework of John Rawls' political liberalism. By drawing from T.H. Marshall's sociological work, Paul J. Weithman argues that full membership in their own society entails that the arguments of religious citizens should be accepted and debated within the limits dictated by an ethics of citizenship, without violating the neutrality of the democratic institutions.
