Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] In this work we propose a methodology for measuring the quality of the shopping cart of Italian families using the spending shares of different categories of food products. We apply the methodology proposed to the Istat data on household expenses for 2013 by calculating a cart quality index of about 13,000 Italian families. Finally we analyze how the index varies based on the demographic characteristics of the households belonging to the sample. The results indicate that in Italy the quality of the diet seems to be all in all good, suggesting also some possible lines of intervention of food policy
