"Quando riesci a vedere l'oceano": i giovani italiani alla Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù di Lisbona 2023

[Autom. eng. transl.] The contribution presents the data from the survey conducted on the occasion of the WYD in Lisbon 2023, an ad hoc qualitative research that involved young people, educators and priests of some Italian dioceses. The contribution intends to return the main evidence of this field investigation. In paragraph 2, the more general dynamics of the relationship between young people and faith are explored through reference to the quantitative and qualitative findings of the Youth Observatory; in paragraph 3, attention is specifically focused on the WYD: its history is retraced, its main liturgical and organizational characteristics are illustrated and, through reference to data from the National Youth Pastoral Service, a quantitative report on the participants in the most recent editions. Paragraph 4 is instead dedicated to the reporting of the qualitative survey carried out ad hoc for the WYD in Lisbon. After having taken into account the methodological options and the characteristics of the sample, the main empirical emergencies are illustrated. Finally, in the last paragraph, dedicated to the conclusions, a summary is drawn up with respect to the meaning that, overall, the Lisbon WYD took on among the young people who participated, highlighting in particular the aspects that can open up new perspectives in the mainstream discourse regarding the relationship of young generations with religion.
