Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The short history of Italian digital fabrication laboratories is characterized by a spontaneous proliferation of spaces and often voluntary management. Unlike the first laboratories linked to MIT in Boston, born with solid institutional subjects behind them, the creation of Italian ones has been based so far on a "private-collective" model that has seen the founders produce a good that can be defined public and which seems to differentiate itself in the different parts of Italy on the basis, often, of the territorial vocation of the areas where the laboratories are located. Today Italy is confirmed as the second European country for the presence of laboratories of the fab lab type, 127 in total (France follows with 133 laboratories). The dissemination process, as we shall see, was very rapid and recovers the initial "delay" with respect to the rest of Europe where in 2008 two laboratories were inaugurated which still today are a reference point for the global network: Barcelona and Amsterdam. The history of Italian maker labs is linked to the presence on the territory of communities linked to the world of hackers, open source and more generally to the development of new technologies. These are people with high skills, a strong propensity to share knowledge and who support the democratization of innovation. The first maker labs were born around the world of open source and digital, and only later did they become connected to the manufacturing world; a world, the latter, well known in the Italian context. Although the time when "everything starts" is not clear (and on this the opinions of the protagonists of the phenomenon are different), it is possible to identify two crucial events for Italian makers.
