Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Penitentiary psychology was born and developed from the second half of the 1970s, in correspondence with the reform of the Italian prison system (law 354/1975) which, through art. 80, represents the regulatory support for the introduction of the figure of the penitentiary psychologist in the prevention and punishment institutes. This sector of psychology deals with the theoretical and applicative aspects that affect the reception and execution phase of the sentence in prisons, also in the connections with contexts outside the prison. Attention is paid to the conditions for limiting the personal freedom of adults and minors, also outlining the tasks and functions of the professionals who work in these contexts.
With the aim of systematizing the knowledge gained in recent decades, this book represents the contribution of operators and experts in the sector who, on the territory of the Lombardy Region, have worked in order to establish a practice that was recognized and recognizable.
The text begins with a chapter that outlines the prerequisites and essential elements for contextualizing the psychological work within the penalty system. It is then divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to working with minors and describes the risk and protection factors that influence their social adaptation and the development of deviant behaviors.
The second part focuses on adults, with particular attention to assessment and treatment actions. The third part is dedicated to professionals who work within the contexts of criminal execution, focusing on the figure of the prison psychologist.
Thanks to this subdivision, the book is aimed both at students who aspire to work in penitentiary contexts and at operators in the sector, for an in-depth study and systematization of consolidated knowledge and practices.
