Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The political economy is, among the human sciences, the one that most experiences the attraction towards quantitative methods and in particular towards mathematics and statistics. Recently this attraction has become even stronger than in the past, to the point that it is not rare to find, among economists, theorists who would like to see the economy considered as a branch of applied mathematics. But would it be really useful to channel the economy into the natural sciences or even push it to the role of a branch of applied mathematics? A careful reflection soon leads to the realization that the relationship between economics and mathematics is much more complex than it may seem at first sight. The author underlines that there are at least four characteristics that differentiate the political economy from the natural sciences: the object of study; the purpose of economic research aimed at influencing the object of study; its characteristic of being positive in certain aspects and in other respects normative; the involvement of value judgments. To illustrate these differences and frame the autonomous dimension of political economy, the author uses a critical review of the opinions of some important economists, who have made contributions to the topic under discussion here. Specific references are made to Marshall, Keynes, Hicks, Morishima and - among the economists most present in our discussions - to Sraffa and Sen, to whom the author feels closer.
