Abstract

This study focused on value transmission in families with adolescents and it measured adolescents’ accuracy in perceiving parental socialization values and adolescents’ acceptance of parental values. Moreover, the study assessed the influence of accuracy and acceptance on the congruence between parents’ socialization values and adolescents’ personal values (assimilation). All the analyses were carried out taking into account parents’ gender, adolescents’ gender and age and the content of values. Participants were 381 family triads with children aged between 15 and 19 and they were asked to fill out a self-report questionnaire. Findings showed that adolescents were quite accurate in perceiving and moderately willing to accept parents’ socialization values. Both accuracy and acceptance were found to be significantly and positively related to assimilation
