Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The sustainable development of food systems is one of the most important current global challenges, often highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals (griggs et al., 2013). In the case of sub-Saharan African countries, this challenge is part of a broader framework: the fight against malnutrition and undernourishment, the protection of natural resources and soil fertility, the protection and enhancement of local biodiversity, the increase in agricultural productivity, knowledge and respect for local cultures, the need for economic growth, the fight against climate change. In other words, the challenge is to promote sustainable development models that are equitably based on the 3 main pillars: environmental, social and economic (WCED, 1987). The objectives that the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart is pursuing in the SASS project (Food Systems and Sustainable Development), a two-year project funded in 2017 by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, are described here. which work, under the coordination of the University of Milan Bicocca (uNIMIB), also the University of Pavia (uNIPV), the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo (uNISg) and the European Center for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) of Maastricht. The project identified as a study area kenya, in the area of Lake Naivasha, and tanzania, in the area of Arusha and the Sagcot corridor, an important area of agricultural development.
