Abstract
This paper analyzes the strange relationship between Roman emperors and their cultural background from the 'uncultivated' (!) Julius Caesar till the uncultivated Theoderich, the Ostrogothic king of Italy, especially focusing on Trajan and Plutarch's booklet 'Ad principem ineruditum'
