Translated title of the contribution: [Autom. eng. transl.] Preface

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingForeword/postscript

[Autom. eng. transl.] Science and technology follow different paths and have different aims, since the first responds to questions and doubts and makes use of abstract and paradoxical models, while the second aims to improve the standard of living of man. In this volume Sergio Carrà analyzes the relationship between the two disciplines, retracing the most significant stages of the last hundred years and highlighting the main points of contact and exchange, but also contrasts and contrasts. In the second half of the last century, in fact, a close union was born between scientific research and technology, which gave rise to some of the most important achievements produced so far; while at the beginning of this new century science and technology find themselves having to face other demanding challenges, above all biology, in a momentum that also involves physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering. What is at stake is not only better protection of health, but the support of human development in the near future, characterized by the depletion of resources, the struggle for energy supply and the crisis of the economic development model.
