Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Living in RSA makes people more vulnerable because entry into the institute involves a destruction of the social world, modifies ties with family and friends, prevents the autonomous management of one's life (Mor, Branco et al. 1995; Tobin, 1989 ) and deprives the elderly of one of their fundamental needs: familiarity (Lawton, 1990). Some studies show that as age increases, the production of autobiographical narratives increases (Pasupathi, Mansour; 2006). Since autobiographical narratives allow us to attribute meaning to the events concerning the Self (Bruner, 1990), contributing to the well-being of the individual, the practice of narration can be a tool to enhance the well-being of the elderly in RSA (Rappapourt; 1995). The present work intends to verify if the use of a training based on autobiographical narration with elderly patients admitted to RSA has an effect on the increase of their well-being in the short and medium term. To 21 subjects, average age 88, a questionnaire was administered, based on the PWB Ryff's questionnaire (Ryff 1989; Ryff et al., 1995; 1996), two days before the first interview and at the end of the narrative training. The subjects participated voluntarily in three meetings, seven days apart. The Panas Scale (Watson et al. 1988) also filled in before and after each interview. The scores of the questionnaires showed an increase in short-term well-being the value of the total of the positive affectivity at the beginning of the three meetings is 97, while at the end of the interviews it is 106. The sum of the averages of the negative affectivity before interviews has a total of 37, and falls, post-intervention, to 32. At the end of the training an evaluation questionnaire was also proposed on the pleasantness and usefulness of the experience. The results highlighted the satisfaction of the participants.
