Abstract
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of South Africa shows that the “periphery” of the world can teach to the “developed” countries new ways of coping with conflicts and new principles of justice especially thanks to people who do not simply theorize “justice”, but knows it by experience, having suffered injustice in their bodies and souls, and also having understood how defective and inadequate can ben the recourse to vengeance and sheer retribution. The path of restorative justice and thus of “soft vengeance”, as Albie Sachs puts it, requires the ability to find the “right words” drawing on a kind of “poetic imagination” which allows to see and exemplarily foster the spark of humanity even in the worst offenders, as well as in the potential offenders. Such imagination thus makes up also the ability to prevent crimes and defend humanity.
