Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Gianfranco Miglio, with an effective metaphor, equated politics with a "crystal". Examining its unitary structure and its different facets, following an original approach compared to the main currents of contemporary political studies, is the objective of this volume. The five chapters into which it is divided - dedicated to community, power, organisation, the enemy, time - see two distinct ways of conceiving the political in dialogue. The first is linked to the tradition of political realism - starting from classics such as Thucydides, Machiavelli and Hobbes -; the second is the one which, especially starting from the 1980s, has shifted attention towards the dynamic of self-representation that defines every political community, which makes it exist as an ideal space perceived as common: an "aesthetic" conception ” which implies a substantial revision of the ways of defining the political: “human nature”, immutable in the tradition of political realism, is thus also connected to devices of power, discursive practices, historical changes. Thus emerges in the crystal of the political - perhaps even in its constitutive structure - a dimension relating to the construction and constant redefinition of that space perceived - despite conflicts and disagreements - as "common". Damiano Palano is full professor of political philosophy and director of the Department of Political Sciences of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan. At the Brescia branch of the same University he coordinates the three-year degree course in Political Sciences and International Relations and teaches Political Science and Political Theory of the Global Age at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. Among his publications in the Scholé catalogue: Bubble Democracy. The End of the Public and the New Polarization (2020) and Political Animal. Introduction to the study of political phenomena (2023).
