Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Starting from an almost complete reconnaissance of the passages of the "Enneads" in which the terms concerning contemplation are present and using the most significant results of the relevant critical literature, I reconstruct the thought of Plotinus on the "metaphysics of contemplation", in an ontological perspective , meta-ontological, anthropological and gnoseological. The monograph consists of six Chapters, which revisit, first the Plostino hypostatic doctrine in a descending sense (in the first three Chapters), then its anthropological and mystical vision (in the last three Chapters). The first Chapter deals with "theoria" in the One: since the first hypostasis is conceived by Plotinus as Unity and absolute simplicity, I present an innovative interpretation of the One as meta-consciousness, meta-thought and meta-contemplation. In the second chapter, dedicated to the Nous, after having dealt with the doctrine of the hypostatic "procession" as a function of "contemplation", in connection with the most important historiographical exegeses on the derivation from the beginning, I point out that from the Meta-Autocontemplation of the One, which self-wants and self-creates, the Nous derives through various phases. Then I present a reconstruction of the second hypostasis, which is "Living Contemplation", in which the contemplating subject and the contemplated object coincide, starting from a critical analysis of the passages concerning contemplation, dating back to a rich tradition of both Platonic and Aristotelian matrix. In the third chapter I use the texts concerning the "theoria" for a review in this key of the genesis of the Soul in the "procession", of its structuring and of its characteristics as "one-and-many", as well as of its creative function in connection with the original plotinian conception of "physis". Thus the doctrine of "creative contemplation" emerges in all its value, especially in reference to the sensible world, as the last stage of the procession from the One. In the fourth Chapter I take again the plotinian conception of man in the light of the "theoria", examining in particular the problems of the "three men", of the "tolma", of immortality, of the eschatological destiny of men and of knowledge. In the fifth chapter, dedicated to the "ways of return", referring to important Plotinian texts revisited backwards the ways of leaving the Principle, in a progressive "simplification" and purification realized thanks to contemplation itself. In Chapter Six my research on contemplation comes to the top. This Chapter, in close connection with the first, develops an innovative interpretation, in addition to the relationship between "praxis" and "theoria", also of reunification with the Principle as meta-contemplation, through the removal of otherness. This "aphairesis" leads to "ecstasy", to conversion and metaphysical silence, exhibited in famous passages of Plotinus. A detailed bibliography on the author and the subject and the Indices follow.
