[Autom. eng. transl.] Ch. Riedweg has made a fundamental introduction to Pythagoras, the extraordinary figure that occupies a central place in the history of science and ancient music on the one hand, of philosophy and religion and of ancient politics on the other (key words in this sense they are the harmony of the spheres, the pro-sofia, reincarnation, vegetarianism). To answer the question of who was really this legendary character, who was at the same time a scientist, philosopher, politician, guru, Riedweg analyzes the various layers of Pythagorean tradition with rare competence, according to a "concentric circles" perspective. to reconstruct, with great effectiveness of writing, both the figure of Pythagoras in the context in which he lived, and the various phases of the history of Pythagoreanism, giving ample space to his influence on European thought. Of particular interest are Riedweg's observations on Pythagoras, the inventor of the term "philosophy" and on the organization of the Pythagorean "secret society". Riedweg's work was translated by me, taking into account both the German edition of 2002 and the English edition of 2005, which presents corrections and revisions of the previous one. I also edited the book on the volume, elaborating the Apparatuses, Notes, the rich Bibliography, the Chronological Tables and the Indexes, which further help to accurately place and dominate the very vast series of concepts, names and data relating to Pythagoras, to his school, to the influences of Pythagoreanism. The pp. 9-42 contain my Presentation of the book, which offers a detailed critical analysis of the methodologies, contents and reconstruction both overall and in the details of the figure of Pythagoras and the history of Pythagoreanism by Ch. Riedweg.
