Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The question of the relationship between the Church and the economy in Italy has long been of interest to historical research both nationally and internationally, however, up to now no investigation has been carried out on the financial aspects of the dioceses. This is a not insignificant gap considering the wealth possessed by the Italian Catholic Church, its significant cultural and political influence, as well as its historical and territorial roots. Thanks to new documentary discoveries that emerged in some Vatican archives, the book recovers from the oblivion of history an interesting subject active in the financial field at the diocesan level: the diocesan fund - also called Promotoria or Ecclesiastical fund - through which capital was collected and administered. intended for works of charity and religion. Riccardo Semeraro reconstructs the history between the post-unification years and the Second World War of these diocesan "endowment funds", analyzing their structure, functioning and financial management aimed at pursuing the goals established by the pious legacies. Among the topics addressed, the anti-confiscation strategies of ecclesiastical bodies, the dialogue between the Vatican and the diocese and the relationship between the Church and capitalism emerge.
