Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In the rich West, the crises of the beginning of the century have highlighted the exacerbation of ancient social and territorial problems, which have taken on new importance in cities undergoing strong transformation due to the effects of globalization and the new structures of the labor market. These are issues that have challenged traditional political balances, with significant repercussions on the evolution of democratic systems. These questions arose throughout the twentieth century and today they are once again central to the structural transformations previously mentioned and to the crisis of the welfare systems built in Europe during the so-called Golden Age. In a dramatic way the theme of living in the suburbs is re-proposed; a problem made more complex by the fact that, today, these areas are no longer just those outside the cities, shaped by the processes of economic modernization of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but they largely characterize the urban fabric and are linked to the existential conditions of those there lives. The volume combines historical and geographical perspectives, according to an interdisciplinary approach. It makes it possible to examine the policies adopted and to be adopted in these territories and the role that social forces and associative networks have played and can exercise in identifying adequate and lasting responses to such complex problems. A long-term look and a more systemic analysis allow a reflection on the relationship between socio-economic development and the processes of construction of associated living in the different contexts of European cities. The social actors, in their various articulations, have offered and are able to offer strategic contributions for the generation of new development models, in which the quality of life in the suburban popular neighborhoods and the processes of social inclusion become a priority again, such as required of the urban agendas of this new millennium.
