[Autom. eng. transl.] Only in recent decades in Italy has social pedagogy become a specific area of reflection in the field of educational sciences, although the roots of this discipline lie in the ancient terrain of pedagogical knowledge. If in the past social pedagogy has had to struggle to establish itself and be recognized as an autonomous discipline, today, with the growth of scientific interest in the social dimension of education and with the introduction of the teaching of Social Pedagogy in university courses of Educational sciences, the number of specialist publications on these topics has increased and consequently the recognition of the discipline in the scientific pedagogical community. Despite these efforts, a unitary and sufficiently shared epistemological framework is still struggling to emerge. On the one hand, this appears to be the inevitable outcome of a science which, after all, is still "young"; on the other, it appears to be a structural element that has accompanied and accompanies the pedagogical reflection. The debate on the epistemological status of social pedagogy and on its operational declinations remains open, this is to tolerate uncertainty and feed the debate, not to give in to easy relativism but in the conviction that only a close confrontation and a research conducted in rigorously we could progressively highlight the pedagogical reasoning on the discipline. It is a question of feeding that hermeneutic circle between theory and praxis that is only able to progressively define the identity of the discipline by capturing the dynamism that characterizes it.
