Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] This article presents the results of a research project, promoted by the Ismu Foundation, which pursued a dual objective. First, to offer an overview of the living conditions and, as far as possible, the history and expectations of Peruvian citizens present in the Milan area. Secondly, to verify the presence and spread, in the experience of these people, of transnational dynamics. Central to the analysis conducted is therefore the concept of transnationalism, which refers to the simultaneous involvement of migrants in the society of origin and in the host society; a society of origin with which we continue to interact systematically even after the start of the migratory journey, without thereby living out one's experience in the destination country. In carrying out the research, particular attention was then devoted to the leading exponents of the Peruvian community present in Milan, those who successfully completed the process of integration into Italian society: success witnessed by the good performance of their professional activity as well as from the prestige enjoyed within the Peruvian community and from any leadership positions acquired in it. The choice to go and interview these subjects was dictated by the conviction, supported by the available literature, that the experience of the most integrated and now free from worries linked to a precarious economic and occupational condition is a privileged observatory to search for the presence of any transnational dynamics and conduct. In addition to this, retracing the experience of successful migrants helps to identify some of the paths that can lead to full and satisfactory integration within Italian society.
