Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In recent decades an interesting debate has developed on the epistemic status of testimony and the problems associated with it. In the middle ages, testimony was not explicitly themed as an epistemic modality, but all authors make use of the argumentum ab auctoritate, in most cases understood and used on the same level of rational argumentation and that of the resulting evidence experience. Bonaventura da Bagnoregio places himself in this perspective by identifying in the testimony a method of reliable knowledge based on interpersonal relationship and language. From Bonaventura's writings we can identify different types of testimony, depending on whether they depend on the signs (for signa) or on the language, be it written (per litteras) or pronounced (per nuntium, viva voce)
