Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Arnolfo, who belonged to the de Arsago family, already a subdeacon in 969, became archbishop of Milan in 998. During the twenty years of the episcopate he committed himself to relaunching the tradition and self-awareness of the Church of Milan in the name of a progressive strengthening of the function episcopal in the city society, of an affirmation of the metropolitan authority, of a revival of the eminent role of the Ambrosian Church and of its summit within the political-military apparatus of the Italian kingdom and of the empire.
