Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume retraces the history of the enhancement and remuneration of human labor, in the long term that goes from antiquity to the present day and in the light of the cultures that have most valued global economic development. Starting from the transition from a natural economy to a monetary economy, monetary remuneration and remuneration in kind have so far been variously combined, also depending on the degree of freedom of work provision. From the fascinating summary proposed here it emerges how the tension between the mere compensation of the effort provided and the need for survival of the worker and his family was immediately present in the practice and discussed at a theoretical-moral level, with important implications on the structure of remuneration.
