Abstract
The article offers some reflections about the collection of poems that Michelangelo designed in 1546: one of the most complex issues concerns the presence of ‘double’ and even ‘triple’ compositions, i.e. lyrics linked up by thick textual connections and so far considered different draftings of the same poem. The examination of manuscripts and an in-depth analysis of these texts suggest that each one has its own autonomy. They also provide an important key to the comprehension of Michelangelo’s attitude to writing, which is obsessively iterative: he repeats, changes, enlarges and shortens fragments of his poems, developing them in new directions.
