Abstract

In light of new archival sources, the essay analyses the cultural effort that gave birth to the Catholic University. This project was originally composed of two educational itineraries: the first aimed to rethink philosophical strands in light of neo-Thomist points of reference, while the second, aiming to educate the future Catholic political and economic elite, focused on the socio-economic sciences. The lively debate spurred by the scholars brought in by Father Gemelli (often from the Toniolo Institute) contributed significantly to the epistemological identification of these sciences. The Department of Social Sciences aimed to equip students of the Catholic University with the knowledge and skills essential in the fulfilment of the vast social, political and economic roles towards which the institution intended to steer them. This Department in fact marked the birth of the Catholic University, to which it bequeathed a profound sensitivity for socio-economic disciplines. It is from thee disciplines that contributed to the formation of some of the University’s most well-known intellectuals and politicians.
