Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Never before translated into Italian, this work represents the essential premise of Mary Wollstonecraft's reflection on women's rights. Thoughts on the education of daughters / Pensieri sull'educazione delle figlie is the first work that Mary Wollstonecraft published (1787). Thus begins a reflection on the role that education, and not only female education, can and is called to play in the construction of a more just and equitable society, founded on the equality of rights between men and women. A reflection that is, therefore, much more than preliminary, an integral and essential part of the broader and authentically political one for which Wollstonecraft is rightly remembered. The premise of these Thoughts is in fact the same one that inspires the Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792): provide girls with an education worthy of that reason which is naturally equal in them to that of males and they will be virtuous women, mothers, wives and citizens and will contribute not only within the domestic walls but in society to the common good.
