Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] With this monographic volume on a castle - the castle of Pavia, still standing in the center of the city, venerable and, if not intact, preserved so much that it has aroused the long interest and in-depth research that is published here - Carlo Cairati addresses a point of great importance in an even bigger picture, which is that of Visconti art in Italy and in Europe "of the courts". His is a precious contribution to a field of research, that on Visconti Lombardy, which started more than ten years ago at the University of Lausanne and is continuing at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. Of these Visconti studies, the castle of Pavia represents a crucial nucleus, born from the will of Galeazzo II in 1360 and immediately became a crossroads of artists and writers, a rival of the other Milanese court places, a "citizen" castle, in this not similar to the others residences of which the Visconti densely dotted the Lombard countryside and landscape.
