[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume is the third - after "Neurophysiology and theories of the mind" (edited by L. Lenzi, 2005) and "Dynamics of volition and freedom" (edited by L. Eusebi, 2008) - that the Center of Bioethics of Istituto Auxologico Italiano dedicates to multidisciplinary analysis on the reality of the human mind and on the biological presuppositions of its functioning, with particular regard to the profile of "wanting": that is, the capacity of the human being to give himself multiple and always new ends, on the basis of designs suitable to achieve them, which seems to differentiate it radically from any other living. Neurophysiological, psychological, philosophical, theological, pedagogical and criminological skills are involved in the various contributions. The visual angle of the "pathology" refers to the investigation of the normal assumptions of voluntary choices and to the question of how much a choice (above all a choice judged to be illicit or immoral) can be considered implemented in a context of illness. Like any subjective reality, volition is also expressed through the body and, today, the neurophysiological dynamics related to it are increasingly the object of research: this requires refinement, but certainly does not make obsolete, the reflection on the theme of freedom , of which we can see on the empirical level only the factors that, at the same time, condition and make it possible, but not - directly - the manifestation. The inevitable opening to the challenge of "liberation" derives from this, as a profound yearning for human existence: not only, through innovative therapeutic approaches, from pathologies in the proper sense of the will, but also from everything that - welcomed freely at first - yes stand in the way of the authentic realization of freedom.
