Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Analysis of the progressive semantic opacification of Ἐριούνιος in a chthonic context: the analysis of epigraphic (in inscriptions and defixiones), exegetical and literary occurrences suggests that the epithet was attributed to Hermes chthonic first as a euphemism, only to then lose this value to the point of being perceived as a mere equivalent of χθόνιος, thus also applicable to other underworld deities.
