Abstract

Some Observations on the New Fragment of the Scythica Vindobonensia, 192r · This new fragment of Dexippus deals with a plague, a consultation of the Sibylline books and a Gothic invasion in Thrace ; the synchronism of these three events fits with the years 253/254 AD ; the consular date of 262, inserted by the author of the Historia Augusta, aimed to displace them from the ‘good’ Valerianus to the ‘bad’ Gallienus ; the biographer kept drawing from the Scythica only : consequently his use of Dexippus’ Chronica is a superfluous hypothesis.
