[Autom. eng. transl.] This text - aimed at students, educators, psychologists and educationalists - is a guide to design, build and apply behavior observation tools in educational contexts and in counseling on evolutionary processes. After having outlined the epistemological problems connected to the definition of the observational method, a brief description of the main techniques used in the study of development is provided, with references to the fundamental role that the observational data have played in the construction of the most important theories on cognitive development, linguistic, affective and relational. Operational indications are then provided to choose what, when and how to observe, in relation to the purposes of observation and according to the statistical processing techniques applicable to the data obtained. Ample space is dedicated to the illustration of some software designed for the automatic coding of events, with the aim of allowing the reader to realize the potential of these media and to orient themselves in their use. The presentation of some standardized observational tools, applicable to evaluate central aspects of development in the first years of life, and the description of two researches - a conduct on the interactive modalities of children placed in a nursery and one aimed at the study of bullying and interactions among peers in primary schools - they offer an exemplification of the use of the observational method to gather information in relation to the characteristics of the evolutionary processes and to specific educational problems.
