Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] One of the most famous paintings in Italian art history, the panel with the Flagellation signed by Piero della Francesca, stands at the center of a substantial historical-critical affair, which too often has taken reckless interpretive embraces, which have made it the emblem , on the one hand, of the true or presumed enigmatic nature of Renaissance art - as a distillation of a 'hypersophistification' as formal as semantic - on the other, of a consequent frantic deciphering effort. The tendency to perform within certain masterpieces that are capriciously intricate and to build around them imposing hermeneutical buildings of an iconological type (often completely conjectural and self-referential), paradoxically disregards in this specific case what should be the basis of any interpretative construction: iconographic reading. Here are presented some results of a study that has now reached maturity, whose main objective is the clarification of the iconographic dictation of the painting in Urbino, an indispensable premise for any further hypothesis concerning the client, dating, destination of the work. His supposed enigmatic nature would seem to derive from a conscious freedom and non-conventionality of the author in the use of the sacred iconographic component in the packaging of his pictorial device. What, on the contrary, emerges from the proposed reading - which, moreover, is completely intuitive if the stratification of passively repeated interpretations does not yet extend a sort of opacifying veil over the image - is the full adherence of the highly calibrated Pierfrancescano language to a shared and solid figurative tradition in the rendering of a precise narrative and semantic content. This datum makes manifest the eminently, indeed exclusively religious, dimension of the painting, previously unknown.
