Abstract
Although hatred and hostile behavior have been present in human societies from the beginning, today hate speech takes on unprecedented manifestations on the social web. The spread of hate speech “onlife” worries about the transversality and the ability to feed tribalisms, “flame wars”, generalized aggression, polarization, racism in an unprecedented way. The text proposes a definition of hate speech, underlining how it is an ambiguous but useful category and highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach and a multiagency perspective; then notes the specific characteristics assumed by
hate speech on the social web, which is constantly evolving. Finally, in the light of the authorship of the “prosumer”, some indications of pedagogical intervention are identified to combat hate speech.
