Abstract
The analysis of the Hesiodean use of ἐπίρροθος from the referential, syntactic, and semantic point of view lets us reach a new interpretation of Op. 560. In its etymological meaning, this epithet reflects here the widely spread image of the running Night. So, ἐπίρροθοι εὐφρόναι can be understood as a cryptic name for the winter nights, which run and accumulate one after another.
