Abstract
This paper discusses the concept of “obliquity” in reported speech in relation to two aspects of the text/textual organization: the introductory verb or context and the typology of the lexical substitutions in the so-called intensional context. The analysis highlights that obliquity does not characterize only the indirect speech but the direct one as well and that such obliquity results from the operations which connote the act of reporting: re-contextualization, mediation and foregrounding.
