Abstract

Whether Caro Michele is considered a story of a boy in flight, as Natalia Ginzburg intended, or as «a novel with no men», as Cesare Garboli wrote, it is a narrative of incommunicability and loss, tinged with an articulate phenomenology of remembrance. The paper examines the various forms assumed by memory in the protagonists’ reflections and in the system of characters, focussing on those passages in which memories nourish a problematic outcome or make possible the rediscovery of exceptional happy moments.
