Abstract

The “bread civilization” was the European Union project at Expo in 2015. This resulting publication, in addition to the patronage of the world’s major organizations (UN, FAO, Unesco, etc.), received the International Prize “Spartenze 2017”. The essay examines the rich problem from the monastic tradition point of view in particular and, through rules, customs and other sources, presents uses, techniques, varieties and symbols of bread-making in the religious sphere. Typical food of hermits and cenobites, in the East as well as in the West, but also food of eternal life in the Christian Eucharist, bread is at the center of cloistered history. Indeed, in many respects, it is the oblative image, the concrete form of charity and expression of fraternal communion.
