Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay analyzes Newtonian reflection on Descartes' optics, showing how it is characterized by Newton's opposition to continuous theories of light, judged inadequate to explain rectilinear propagation. Contrary to what is usually stated, however, Newton's debt to Descartes cannot be identified only in the theoretical presuppositions of a mathematical and mechanical order. Through the concept of "conatus", suitably transformed into a concept of hydrostatic pressure, Descartes continues to operate providing important elements for Newton's theory.
