[Autom. eng. transl.] Among the nearly five million Italians who participated in the First World War, many writers have heard the urge to recount, in various ways (immediately or in memory, in prose or poetry), one's tragic experience of war. Many of these writers have limited themselves to offering their own testimony, but others, precisely in the life of war and in the trenches, have found the opportunity to fully enter our literature. This is the case, exemplary from this point of view, of Giuseppe Ungaretti, but also of many others who in such circumstances were able to find an imprint of original creative force which, in the literary panorama of the time, perhaps only such a dramatic event could have been able to generate.
