Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] To understand the dynamics of history and politics, an adequate knowledge of the nature of man is required. This is the starting point for Reinhold Niebuhr's work - translated here for the first time into Italian -, where the ambiguity of the human personality is described, characterized by a radical freedom that opens up infinite possibilities for good and evil. This ambiguity is also reflected in the discrepancies between the moral and social behavior of individuals and that of groups, less able to control instincts and to go beyond their own interests, as, for example, the issues of racism and nationalism demonstrate. To try to resolve the tension between the individual and the community, between classes, ethnic groups and states, Niebuhr declares the urgent need for a "Christian realism", which allows politics not to remain trapped in the immanence of history, but to turn towards what exceeds it.
