Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] San Martino: a son of Christian Aquileia San Martino, although jealously adopted by the Frankish kings as their own patron and of their people and thus become 'French' almost par excellence, does not cease to manifest itself in historical research as a saint 'European' par excellence. The dense, ancient and popular dissemination of its cult from the British Isles to the Christian regions of the Mediterranean and Slav East is evident: from the inextinguishable heat of its adventurous biographical memory - set in a physical space of which Hungary and the Balkans, Rome and western France circumscribes the wide perimeter - and from its spiritual exemplarity - accessible to the admiration of the simple, yet warned of the most vivid theological throbs in the ecclesial torment of its time - in fact sprang a model of humanity (that is, Christian holiness) of true prophetic actuality, because capable of renewing attractive ages of sympathy and inner closeness. It is therefore natural that the quantity of studies on the character of Martino is impressive, such as to discourage any search for new perspectives that update the portrait. However, we wanted to bet on finding one: and the Aquileian landscape - we are convinced - has allowed the success of an unprecedented angle. For the increase in Martino's historical understanding, the attempt to recognize the qualities of an authentic witness to the spirituality that flourished vigorously in Christian Aquileia in the fourth century could not be lacking; within the Aquileian missionary boundaries that "man filled with God" had not only passed his childhood, but, by now a mature man, he also wanted at all costs to return as to his "homeland": finally sharing it with the resolute certainty of his own original vocation evangelical, Martin could not have remained - even in the most remote places, like other 'Aquileia' like him (Gerolamo, Rufino, Venanzio Fortunato ...) - son in his own way of this "homeland".
