Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Physiological and psychological processes interact in the production of the nociceptive experience. Chronic pain therapy includes various treatment protocols that are divided into three approaches: psychological, psychophysiological and pharmacological. With the aim of investigating the potential role of non-invasive psychophysiological techniques in pain modulation, the effect of psychoacoustic stimulation (listening to 10 minutes of songs with binaural beats on the theta and delta bands) and the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS of 10 minutes at 5Hz on the left DLPFC) on a nociceptive experience. 18 healthy subjects participated in the experiment. Experimentally controlled nociception has been induced, evaluated using the Visual-Analogue Scale, and EEG measurements have been recorded for the entire duration of the experiment. The experimental design includes 5 blocks of 5 minutes of recording: a baseline preceding the stimulation and 4 consecutive blocks after stimulation. The nociceptive sensation was induced at the beginning of the first post-stimulation recording block and removed at the beginning of the last. Data were analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA. The results of the analyzes show an effect of binaural beats on pain modulation. Furthermore, both TMS and binaural beats produce an activation on lower frequencies (Alpha and Theta bands). TMS induces further activation at higher frequencies (Beta and Gamma bands). Finally, different timing is observed in the effect induced by the techniques on pain modulation (delayed effect of TMS). Both techniques are able to modulate, albeit differently, the nociceptive effect, suggesting the possible implementation of a drug therapy for the treatment of pain.
