Abstract

The article postulates the thesis that Miguel Angel Asturias, in his novel “Hombres de maíz”, creates a myth, that of Gaspar Ilom; a myth that corresponds to his idea of refounding the Guatemalan nation, contained in his essay "Arquitectura de la vida nueva ", published at the end of the 1920s. Asturias vigorously attacks the predominant liberal ideas in Latin America, as generators of dictatorships and injustices, and proposes, instead, a new form of state, based on aesthetics, education and health. To endow that new nation with a myth, Asturias writes "Hombres de maíz".
