Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume contains five essays that focus on unexpected declinations of the theme of the 'beauty of the soul' and its negation. Against the background of the eighteenth-century discussion around the concept of "schöne Seele", starting from Herderian thought on the "ganzer Mensch", one encounters the degeneration of the beautiful soul first in the romantic era and then in the narrative work of Felix Dahn; Stefan George's poem, on the other hand, sees the manifestation of the divine in the human "Geist" and "Seelengrund"; in the rewritings of the Greek myths of M. L. Kaschnitz the beauty of the soul becomes an antidote to the barbarism of Nazism.
