Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The ability to mentalize, that is, to bring out the emotions, intentions and needs that lie behind our actions and those of others, is cultivated in the primary bond of attachment and refined in crucial relationships in adolescence and adulthood. It is a pillar of our mental health: as it fades, the chances of affective disorders, social isolation and self-destructive behaviors increase. The therapist of any clinical orientation - not only psychodynamic - who must face these psychopathological conditions will therefore be able to benefit greatly from mentalization based treatment (MBT), the treatment model proposed by Peter Fonagy and Anthony Bateman. It is a model that has applications not only in the area of borderline psychopathology (personality disorder), but also in family and adolescent intervention. In one volume, theory, empirical research, clinical practice: the text is the most complete introductory guide to mentalization-based therapies.
