[Autom. eng. transl.] In the context of the study of contemporary migrations, considered predominantly as labor immigrations whose social, cultural and political implications are hidden, a need for social recomposition emerges, which translates, among other things, into the affirmation of institutional mediation in multicultural contexts. Mediation is a concept that is not well defined on a theoretical level, which can allow the deepening of a multiplicity of questions relating to the ways in which immigrants enter the receiving country, to inter-ethnic relations and to the identity paths of migrants who are in live between two cultures. There is not a single form of mediation, but it varies as the models of integration change, different if oriented to assimilation, to tolerant coexistence between groups or to intercultural exchange. Furthermore, in the stabilization phase of immigration in Italy, the importance of a reflection on citizenship and the role of mediation is affirmed, within the social policies for immigrants: if on the one hand, the demand for mediators grows in the country in public and private services, as an interface between institutions and immigrant communities, on the other hand there is no shared opinion about the profile, the functions and the task of the mediators. The field survey, presented in the book, set itself the goal of contributing to the theoretical and practical definition of mediation, in order to study the origins of the development of this strategy for the integration of immigrants, the relationship between different forms of mediation and types of integration, the link between the profession and the membership of mediators. The qualitative research was carried out in the city of Turin, a veritable laboratory for decades of experience in the field of mediation and policies for immigrants. The survey allowed to highlight the relevant and lively attention of institutions, Italian and foreign associations to the problems posed by immigration, as well as the existence of a multiplicity of ways of understanding the mediations that are realized in the relations between institutions, operators of services, mediators and immigrants, which allow us to prefigure the transition to a social model, where mediation in institutions aims to become the place of possible encounter between cultures, promoting a quality relationship with cultural diversity. Finally, the analysis of the processes, through which the mediators work and reflect on their identity, can represent a privileged observatory to identify and support the identity paths of immigrants, one of the areas in which the possibility of recognizing migrant subjects is played out.
