Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The chapter describes the fundamental role of policies - international and national - in relation to the development and future of ME / ML. It reconstructs the definition of the main issues that have become part of the European agenda and, consequently, of the Italian one. Report how, despite the development of a first-rate scientific debate and the ability of the international community to influence the definition of the issues on the agenda, after 2010, the policies supporting media literacy became known as a setback. accompanied by the production of a new political framework that included, at least in Italy, the Media Literacy on the horizon of Digital Literacy and, above all, of its interpretation inspired by a technocratic and economist vision, not always compatible with that dimension of cultural development , with a critical and creative character, traditionally recognized in the ML (Burn, 2009; Frau-Meigs, 2011), of which also traces survive in the documents of direction and, sometimes, in the rhetoric of the political institutions. This vision risks being decisive in orienting strategies, selecting priorities and objectives and, above all, allocating the necessary funds.
